Way to go!

Re: Baked versus Raw Sweet Potatos

I am a yo-yo between raw foods and cooked foods- though the raw, most of the time, is in the highest percentage of the two. I think someday I may transition to mostly raw and I spend several months of the year in the raw. I also find a baked sweet potato to sometimes just hit the spot and be so nourishing especially when combined with a favorite salad. And most of the time I think a cooked sweet potato seems way more natural than a large amount of nuts. Every time I make a nut dish, I think about how it would be to prepare if I actually had to shell all the nuts. I would probably use less nuts! Though I do love them! I think sweet potato chips work out best if you slice them REALLY thin. I know someone who used something like a spiralizer on them and they were great that way.
I also really enjoy steamed broccoli with tahini drizzled on it. In a book I have- the Whole Foods Companion- it has the nutrtional break down of cooked whole foods over raw whole foods and broccoli suprisingly loses very little of its nutritional make up when cooked (same with chard). I enjoy it so much right now (especially in the cooler months) and my sons do as well, so it makes the perfect lunch at least once a week for us.

Re: Baked versus Raw Sweet Potatos

Thanks Jason :) Sweet potato basil bake sounds great. Yum... Haha--can you tell I'm still thinking about those yummy sweet potatoes?!

Re: Baked versus Raw Sweet Potatos

I baked a sweet potato basil bake for our thanksgiving as well. I was on the 3rd week of the Ejuva cleanse so I couldn't eat much, but I did enjoy the sweet potato's.

I dig that you allow yourself that 2% to enjoy some cooked things. Nice to keep things flexible.

Re: Baked versus Raw Sweet Potatos

Thanks Simona. I admire your wisdom ;)

Re: Baked versus Raw Sweet Potatos

Wow. Even steamed broccoli? I guess I didn't expect anything bad to happen to me from a baked potato. But if I unknowingly ate something with dairy in it I would definitely get a runny nose the next day.
At least you know your limits. Good for you for sticking to them!

Re: Baked versus Raw Sweet Potatos

Good idea. Maybe I'll try that next time...Though I think the bigger issue is that I just don't like potato chips anymore. And these will definitively never melt in your mouth like baked potato chips do. Too bad.

Re: Baked versus Raw Sweet Potatos

No, I don't think about those things, but not everyone is at the same point in their life situation.. I think a steamed root is much better than a lot of nuts (worse when with a large amount of sugar, don't we all know..)

I don't think cooked is "better" than raw, but it is definitely better to accept and cherish where you are and what your intentions are. We are all evolving on different levels.

Dried is harder to digest indeed.
Simona

Re: Baked versus Raw Sweet Potatos

life is too short to deny yourself things that you enjoy.. if youre in the mood for a sweet potato- dig in :)

too bad about those chips- maybe soak the slices for a long time before dehydrating?

Re: Baked versus Raw Sweet Potatos

Nope. It's crazy, I've only been raw since January but every single time I "cheat" I get really sick. Even if I thoroughly LOVE what I'm eating and I have no guilt at all, the next day I get a runny nose and often get a full-blown cold. And I'm not talking about cheating by eating something seriously naughty, i'm talking about even things like steamed broccoli.

Sometimes I honestly HATE being raw. I don't fit in socially, my food is either boring or it takes me an hour to make, and sometimes, well, I just want to be "normal". But my body leaves me no choice. I was SO sick just eating cooked vegan foods and now I feel a ton better...but I can't cheat...ever.
